Powerful Women in Construction

Powerful Women in Construction A History of Powerful Women in Construction In the construction industry, it’s safe to say that women are underrepresented. Even when compared to traditionally male dominated sectors, women have yet to break through in many areas of construction. Just 9% of U.S. construction workers are female. I find it disturbing that as an industry we miss out on this huge pool of talent.   Let’s look back on some of the powerful women in history that helped to pave the way for the women today who want to be given a chance. Emily Roebline (1834-1903) The first woman field engineer is credited for her role in the completion of the Brooklyn bridge. She took on the project after her husband who was leading the project became bed-ridden from developing caisson disease. She was the supervisor and took over the planning. Upon completion, she was named as the Chief Engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge. Her work in this highly technical engineering feat helped create empowerment that women could perform in areas outside of the factories that were common in those days. Lillian Gilbreth (1878-1972) Known as the woman of modern management, Lillian Gilbreth had the education, the career, and 12 children of her own. This mother applied herself to a scientific approach to workplace efficiency and management. She was a government consultant during the Great Depression and WWII, able to apply creative solutions to complex problems. She invented shelving in refrigerator doors and the foot-pedal garbage can. For construction, her application of science to the workplace streamlined processes and helped increase productivity. Mary Kenney O’Sullivan (1864-1943) This American labor leader worked tirelessly to improve factory conditions through the organization of unions. Starting out in the 1800s as an apprentice dressmaker, she took her distaste for the bad conditions in factories to eventually become the founder of the Women’s Trade Union League. She brought together professional, affluent, and working women to improve conditions for women in factories. She was a factory inspector in a government branch from 1914 until she retired in 1934. Her work in unions has helped women in construction to this day find support and representation. Kris Young Working her way through the ranks of the Associated General Contractors of America, Kris Young served as President in 2011. In her Iowa chapter, she started as Treasurer in 1992 and worked to become President of the chapter, a title which she held for many years. She was also the President and CEO of Miller the Driller in Des Moines, Iowa. Young was one woman that we can say can juggle it all. She has a strong connection to her Church, engages in hobbies that included gardening and scrapbooking, and continues to push for employee rights with her work in many committees such as the Labor Policy Committee and the EEO/DBE Advisory Council. She has over 40 years in the business. Frances Perkins (1880-1965) Frances Perkins was FDR’s Secretary of Labor and first woman to serve as cabinet secretary. This self-made woman credits her grandmother for her power, and is quoted saying that “being a woman has only bothered me in climbing trees”. Yes, she never let anything stop her from pushing for benefits for the construction industry. She defended the minimum wage and helped develop the Fair Labor Standards Act. Her work in government illustrated a determination not only break new ground but excel at her endeavors. Who is an important woman in your life? No doubt we all can think of many. Never underestimate their influence and reach. It would be a loss on any business to count them out. So, lift up, trust, and empower the women in your life to keep pushing through. For construction, the jobs are there. Get your OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 training and get to work!

In the event that you are meeting for a position, it is normal that you will arrange your first compensation offer. Neglecting to arrange is identical to leaving a pile of cash on the table. Be set up for a no. For whatever length of time that you request a raise in a balanced, non-angry way, the most exceedingly terrible conceivable reaction would be a no. And as disappointing as a no may be, a no isn't until the end of time. Ask your manager when it is acceptable to return to the issue. Build Your Tribe for Career Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Build Your Tribe for Career Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career It is great to say you have 500+ LinkedIn connections or thousands of Twitter followers, but are they in your tribe? In my book, Repurpose Your Career   A Practical Guide for Baby Boomers, which I co-authored with Susan Lahey, your tribe is described as follows: Your tribe is the group of people who will get you through your Career Pivot, because believe me,with all this change, facing uncertain prospects and being humble while asking for help, you are going to need some people rooting for you. Your tribe is also the group you can call on for an introduction or some advice over coffee. And they can call on you, tooâ€"whether for themselves, or for a friend who wants some intelligence about your areas of expertise. It’s like the barn raising communities where you all help your neighbor build his barn, knowingâ€"without askingâ€" he’ll show up with lunch and a hammer to help you raise yours. The reality is we can maintain a maximum of about 150 relationships in our lives Make a list of all of the people you can go to for a favor and you are sure that favor will be granted. It sure is a lot smaller than the 500+ connections on LinkedIn. That is Your Tribe! What your tribe can do Just about ten years ago, after a near fatal bicycle accident, I decided to volunteer for a layoff from my high tech employer and I pursued my Texas high school math teaching certificate. I was hired at an inner city high school to teach Algebra and where the turn over was incredibly high. It was a tough place to start a teaching career. Every three weeks I sent out an e-mail to a list of about 100 people. I wrote about my kids, yes they were my kids. 90% of my kids were of color and came from poverty. I realized after a very short period of time I was not in a high school that I was familiar with.   I grew up in a mostly white, middle class, suburban neighborhood, where most parents were married and educated. Where I taught was an urban school, with majority minority population, single parent families and poverty. I found myself saying Toto we are not in Kansas anymore! These e-mails were my blog. This group became my tribe. More importantly they became my fan club. I received lots of advice and help but more importantly I received love and support. I would not have made it through my first year of teaching with out my tribe! I had my tribe to support me! Building your tribe You probably already have a tribe. You just need to define who currently belongs. Dig through your e-mail directory, LinkedIn contacts and FaceBook friends identity those people that if you needed help you would feel comfortable going to them. Create a list of everyone who meets this criteria. After you finish, analyze this list for skill set, generations, occupations, and other factors. What is missing? When I went through this exercise a couple of years ago, I realized how few local sales people I knew and could depend on. The next step is to actively seek out those individuals who can fill the holes in your tribe. The last step is to actively cultivate your tribe but that is for another post!  Do you know who is in your tribe? Author: Marc Miller is the founder of Career Pivot which helps Baby Boomers design careers they can grow into for the next 30 years. Marc authored the book Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for Baby Boomers, published in January 2013, which has been featured on Forbes.com, US News and World Report, CBS Money-Watch and PBS’ Next Avenue. Can You Start A Small Business With Bad Credit

Can You Start A Small Business With Bad Credit Starting your own business can be part of a long-term plan for financial independence. But what if you’ve had a rough start resulting in poor personal credit? Will you have to work for others for the rest of your life? Not necessarily. Business credit and personal credit are actually two different things, and those with poor personal credit can actually take steps to develop a healthy business credit line while forging their own path. The first step is to understand how these different forms of credit are connected. The Road To A Business Loan One of the main reasons that people believe they can’t start a small business if they have poor personal credit is that, while over time you can build business credit separately from personal credit, they’re more closely connected in the early years. Before banks will extend business credit to an applicant, they will typically check their personal credit to make sure they’re capable of taking on debt. It makes sense that banks do a personal credit check for new business operators â€" you don’t suddenly develop new financial management skills just because you’ve decided to start a business. Unfortunately, it can keep people who are capable of handling a loan from receiving business credit, and this practice can be especially discriminatory towards women, who are 15-20% less likely to be approved for a loan than equally qualified men. Make Your Case In order to bridge the gap between your credit history and your potential loan, it’s important to understand that though bad credit will limit your loan options, it won’t close you off entirely. Rather, lenders look at what are termed the five Cs when deciding who qualifies for a loan. The first, Character, includes your personal credit score â€" but when Character is working against you, your best option is to improve on the other four criteria. Many people with poor credit are still carrying past damage, despite improved circumstances. That means your Capacity â€" the second C â€" to pay back a loan may be much better than your credit score suggests. Capacity compares debt to cash flow, so if you’ve got the money to back up your loan request, it’s likely you’ll be approved. Similarly, if you’ve spent time building Collateral, seeking loans designed to meet your borrowing Conditions, and showing investment of Capital into the business can all make you a better candidate. Building Better Business Credit When you do begin pursuing business funding, building and maintaining good business credit should be a top priority â€" especially if you have questionable personal credit. In order to do this, you need to maintain a strict division between personal and business finances. That means you need a federal tax ID for your business and a separate business bank account. Intermixing personal and professional funds can cause real damage to your financial standing, and the only way to build strong business credit is to protect that separation. In addition to separating your personal and professional finances, another way you can help your business stand out and gain standing in the community is by getting your business license as well as specialty certifications and society memberships. For example, there are local and national organizations that certify women- and minority-owned businesses. You can also take courses and gain skills-based certifications that will enhance the credit-worthiness of your business. Finding Your Niche Poor personal credit shouldn’t destroy your financial future. Even those with very poor credit histories can typically find funding through nonprofits and microlenders or specialty loans designed for those with bad credit. Once you’ve established your business as a member of the professional community, you’ll have the opportunity to build a better financial reputation attached to your business persona.

Guide to Resume Writing For Students

Guide to Resume Writing For StudentsIf you are a student with job hunting hopes, the best thing you can do is learn to write a professional resume. A professional resume is a legal document that outlines your experience and skills so employers can evaluate whether you will make a good match for a job.A resume is basically an application form which contains information about your academic, professional and work experience in order to describe how you did when you were in the same position you are in now. A common mistake made by students and many professionals is to write a single page resume and cram in as much information as possible to appear very impressive. This approach is not the way to go.You should first focus on preparing a professional resume that not only tells what you have done, but also the reason why it is relevant to the job. Your goal should be to summarize what is needed to be considered relevant. For instance, if you are applying for a job in manufacturing, then yo u should clearly define the type of work you did, the time you worked, your responsibilities and those of your co-workers, and other important details.A professional resume is a must-have for students who want to get ahead in the corporate world. 10 Keys to Amplify Your Executive Brand Online - Executive Career Brandâ„¢

10 Keys to Amplify Your Executive Brand Online Make no mistake. Your online reputation matters. People are Googling you before deciding whether to interview you for a job, hire you or do business with you. If fear of exposing yourself online is holding you back, reconsider. Most of us can no longer ignore our online identities. Studies show that by far, most recruiters and hiring professionals reject candidates based on what they find or don’t find about them online. Given two equal candidates, in terms of skill sets, education, work history, and all around good fit for the job, they are likely to choose the one who has more quality search results. How does your online footprint compare to your competitors in the executive job market? When someone Googles your name, will they find plenty of varied on-brand information about you, supporting your value promise to your target employers? If you need help defining your executive brand and value promise, and creating your brand resume and career biography, see: 10 Steps to an Authentic, Magnetic Personal Brand How to Write An Irresistible C-level Executive Brand Resume How to Write a C-level Executive Career Brand Biography There are many places and ways to build your online footprint. Here are 10 that I recommend and help my clients develop: 1. Build a website, blog, or web portfolio of documents using the domain yourname.com. Youre practically guaranteed the #1 spot in search results for your name if you own that URL. If your name is taken, try adding your middle initial, or some identifier JohnSmithCIO.com. I recommend a blog-based website over a static website or web portfolio. Nothing works as well as a blog to build visibility and credibility for your brand and subject matter expertise. Google LOVES blogs and seeks them out over static sites, because the content constantly expands, even if you only post a few times a month. Executives are being found and offered plum opportunities by their target employers because their blogging activity positioned them as subject matter experts, and a good fit for the companies. For some blogging executives, new positions are created to fit them into organizations. Their promise of value is that apparent. Want to tap into the hidden job market? Start blogging. And stream your blog posts on Twitter,
