Job mobility is two things: the probability that a worker will change jobs, and the potential for that worker to move upward and succeed. A  high-mobility worker is more likely to make successful job changes to vacancies that  offer career progression, whereas low-mobility workers typically  remain at  a jobs and find less opportunities to progress forward. Takeaways: High-mobility employees are usually well-educated  and  able of meeting the demands of changing technical fields, whilst  low-mobility are typically educated to a high school level, as these workers struggle to adapt to demanding jobs. 80% of high-mobility employees are working  full-time and possess a 4-year degree or post graduate qualification.  53% of low-mobility employees are employed and possess a high school diploma. Popular industries for high-mobility employees are education, health care and accounting/finance, while popular industries for low-mobility workers are retail, manufacturing and general labour. High-mobility employees are much more engaged with social media: 26% of high-mobility employees keep their LinkedIn profile up-to-date, whereas just 5% of low-mobility workers  keep their LinkedIn profile current. Build Your Tribe for Career Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career It is great to say you have 500+ LinkedIn connections or thousands of Twitter followers, but are they in your tribe? In my book, Repurpose Your Career   A Practical Guide for Baby Boomers, which I co-authored with Susan Lahey, your tribe is described as follows: Your tribe is the group of people who will get you through your Career Pivot, because believe me,with all this change, facing uncertain prospects and being humble while asking for help, you are going to need some people rooting for you. Your tribe is also the group you can call on for an introduction or some advice over coffee. And they can call on you, tooâ€"whether for themselves, or for a friend who wants some intelligence about your areas of expertise. It’s like the barn raising communities where you all help your neighbor build his barn, knowingâ€"without askingâ€" he’ll show up with lunch and a hammer to help you raise yours. The reality is we can maintain a maximum of about 150 relationships in our lives Make a list of all of the people you can go to for a favor and you are sure that favor will be granted. It sure is a lot smaller than the 500+ connections on LinkedIn. That is Your Tribe! What your tribe can do Just about ten years ago, after a near fatal bicycle accident, I decided to volunteer for a layoff from my high tech employer and I pursued my Texas high school math teaching certificate. I was hired at an inner city high school to teach Algebra and where the turn over was incredibly high. It was a tough place to start a teaching career. Every three weeks I sent out an e-mail to a list of about 100 people. I wrote about my kids, yes they were my kids. 90% of my kids were of color and came from poverty. I realized after a very short period of time I was not in a high school that I was familiar with.   I grew up in a mostly white, middle class, suburban neighborhood, where most parents were married and educated. Where I taught was an urban school, with majority minority population, single parent families and poverty. I found myself saying Toto we are not in Kansas anymore! These e-mails were my blog. This group became my tribe. More importantly they became my fan club. I received lots of advice and help but more importantly I received love and support. I would not have made it through my first year of teaching with out my tribe! I had my tribe to support me! Building your tribe You probably already have a tribe. You just need to define who currently belongs. Dig through your e-mail directory, LinkedIn contacts and FaceBook friends identity those people that if you needed help you would feel comfortable going to them. Create a list of everyone who meets this criteria. After you finish, analyze this list for skill set, generations, occupations, and other factors. What is missing? When I went through this exercise a couple of years ago, I realized how few local sales people I knew and could depend on. The next step is to actively seek out those individuals who can fill the holes in your tribe. The last step is to actively cultivate your tribe but that is for another post!  Do you know who is in your tribe? But what if you’ve had a rough start resulting in poor personal credit? Will you have to work for others for the rest of your life? Not necessarily. Business credit and personal credit are actually two different things, and those with poor personal credit can actually take steps to develop a healthy business credit line while forging their own path. The first step is to understand how these different forms of credit are connected. The Road To A Business Loan One of the main reasons that people believe they can’t start a small business if they have poor personal credit is that, while over time you can build business credit separately from personal credit, they’re more closely connected in the early years. Before banks will extend business credit to an applicant, they will typically check their personal credit to make sure they’re capable of taking on debt. It makes sense that banks do a personal credit check for new business operators â€" you don’t suddenly develop new financial management skills just because you’ve decided to start a business. Unfortunately, it can keep people who are capable of handling a loan from receiving business credit, and this practice can be especially discriminatory towards women, who are 15-20% less likely to be approved for a loan than equally qualified men. Make Your Case In order to bridge the gap between your credit history and your potential loan, it’s important to understand that though bad credit will limit your loan options, it won’t close you off entirely. Rather, lenders look at what are termed the five Cs when deciding who qualifies for a loan. The first, Character, includes your personal credit score â€" but when Character is working against you, your best option is to improve on the other four criteria. Many people with poor credit are still carrying past damage, despite improved circumstances. That means your Capacity â€" the second C â€" to pay back a loan may be much better than your credit score suggests. Capacity compares debt to cash flow, so if you’ve got the money to back up your loan request, it’s likely you’ll be approved. Similarly, if you’ve spent time building Collateral, seeking loans designed to meet your borrowing Conditions, and showing investment of Capital into the business can all make you a better candidate. Building Better Business Credit When you do begin pursuing business funding, building and maintaining good business credit should be a top priority â€" especially if you have questionable personal credit. In order to do this, you need to maintain a strict division between personal and business finances. That means you need a federal tax ID for your business and a separate business bank account. Intermixing personal and professional funds can cause real damage to your financial standing, and the only way to build strong business credit is to protect that separation. In addition to separating your personal and professional finances, another way you can help your business stand out and gain standing in the community is by getting your business license as well as specialty certifications and society memberships. For example, there are local and national organizations that certify women- and minority-owned businesses. You can also take courses and gain skills-based certifications that will enhance the credit-worthiness of your business. Finding Your Niche Poor personal credit shouldn’t destroy your financial future. Even those with very poor credit histories can typically find funding through nonprofits and microlenders or specialty loans designed for those with bad credit. Once you’ve established your business as a member of the professional community, you’ll have the opportunity to build a better financial reputation attached to your business persona.

Ideal World vs Realistic World. Its on. - When I Grow Up IDEAL WORLD: Wake up an hour early twice a week to run on the treadmill. Do it again on the weekend. Clear 2 hours in your schedule to return all your phone calls. Take a yoga class for 90 minutes every Saturday. Have it take 15 minutes to clean up each room in your house. Clean one room/day have 3 days to rest. Start finish a research paper in a month. Wake up at 10a on a Saturday to do laundry. Do one big grocery shop every Monday night. REALISTIC WORLD: The bed is warm. Outside is cold. The treadmill is in a windowless basement and it might be used by someone else. You didnt get to sleep until midnight anyway. I can run tomorrow. In the 2 hours you scheduled to return calls talk to 5 people, 1 of them picks up. And they have to be somewhere in 10 minutes. Realize that between changing for yoga class, walking to yoga class, being early to buy a class/get a good spot, taking the class walking back, youre looking at sacrificing 2+ hours of precious weekend time. Dont make good on your commitment to not put paper down, or to hang up your clothes every day, or to put away your shoes. What should take 15 minutes if you were disciplined takes 45. You dread Living Room Clean-Up Day and it falls by the wayside. Ignore the time you scheduled for yourself to start the research paper. Theres a class to take! And TV to watch! And youre sooooo tired anyway, your brain wont even work. Saturday is the one day to sleep in! If you get up before 11a its impossible to get off the couch much before 12:30p. But Sat morning time is precious coffee, bagels, The Soup, hubby time. We have enough groceries. We just need some coffee, some turkey, chicken, soup, bread, salsa, lettuce, tomatoes, apples.Ill order it online for delivery so it could be here tomorrow. The convenience is worth the marked-up prices. Oh wait, were not home tomorrow! OK, so the day after.Ill just buy lunch instead of brown-bagging tomorrowAnd well order in dinner.. I hate to say it, but Ideal World is where my intentions live (I like to think they reside in a 1,000 square foot Manhattan loft that was purchased for under $100K 15 years ago is now worth about $2 mil). I spend countless hours learning about organizational tools  and being productive even getting wonderful e-sessions by a professional organization coach! and I go through all the motions. I do all of the steps. I put my tasks in my calendar. I block my time into categories so I know that my social time for right now should only be scheduled on Fri Sat nights. But my intentions do not live where Realistic World lives.   Realistic World is full of fun friends, and family functions, and forty-two inch TVs, and other f words (get your mind out of the gutter). Its where the clothes go on the floor instead of in the laundry bag, and shoes remain in the living room instead of in the closet, and where its emotionally hard to leave your hubbys side to do your own work in the cavernous bedroom. And youre tired. A lot. I need to find the balance. And the commitment. And the responsibility. And the grown-up in me. Think I can find Good Intentions World instead? Eh who am I kidding? I wouldnt want to live there anyways.
